In 1953 Founder Erick O. Schonstedt made his mark in the aerospace industry designing his first instruments and outfitting more than 400 satellites with magnetometers along with the Hubble telescope. And although the company still offers products still suitable for above the earth, Schonstedt has been focusing on instruments to be used below the earth to aid in locating, tracing, excavating, repairing, maintaining and recovering ferrous metal objects buried up to 20 feet, or 6 meters, underground. Objects include:
- Survey pins
- Water and gas valves
- Manhole covers
- Unexploded ordnance
- Other deep iron/steel materials
Today, we stand out and apart as manufacturer and distributor of rugged
and dependable handheld underground locators. Our products are manufactured in the U.S. and shipped throughout the world. Schonstedt continues to receive numerous favorable and positive testimonials from individuals in the commercial and government sectors worldwide.
I look forward to discussing your interest in Schonstedt products that are unsurpassed not only for its environmental stability but also for its ability to detect iron and steel objects at extreme depth underground.

CORPORATE FACT SHEET
Founded in 1953 by Erick O. Schonstedt as a producer of magnetometers for the aerospace industry, including over 400 satellites and the Hubble telescope.
It was not until Schonstedt’s “flagship” product, the GA-52 Magnetic Locator, became the instrument of choice for surveyors in the 1970’s that the company found its true path
In 1998, the company moved to its custom-built headquarters location to the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, about an hour’s drive from Washington and Baltimore and where the company assembles and provides quality control for its instruments
